The OpenShift team is getting excited about the upcoming DevNation conference for Open Source Software, happening April 13th through 17th in San Francisco (same week as Red Hat Summit)!
With an amazing lineup of topics and speakers, DevNation is shaping up to be an excellent opportunity to learn from the best in Open Source.
We’ll also be bringing the developer community together for an Open Source-themed Hack Night, starting at 6pm on April 16th.
Hacking for Open Source
Hackathons often incorporate a specific focus or theme in order to help attendees select a project. Since the theme of our Hack Night is “Hacking for Open Source”, we are hoping to see projects focused on:
- open data and civic hacking
- hardware hacking using ARM, arduino, and other hardware and/or infrastructure in your project (OpenStack, OpenShift, etc…)
- new apps or even new business ideas (as long as your source is open)
- extend open source and add that feature or interface enhancement that you’ve always felt was missing from your favorite project!
Come with a project idea in mind, and share it with the crowd to recruit collaborators for your effort. Or, join up with other open source contributors to find a project idea that inspires you.
Judging Criteria
Your team’s submission will be weighed against the following criteria:
- Originality / Innovation (25%)
- Quality: everything works as explained, live demo available (25%)
- Usability: Points for user interface design, modularity, documentation (25%)
- Presentation: You must be able to articulate the value of your contribution via a short demo, or presentation (25%)
- Bonus points: for using at least one building block mentioned in the lightning talks (+10% max)
Prizes will be awarded for the night’s Top Hacks
Since every open source contributor deserves to be rewarded for their efforts, we’ll be offering a few random prizes throughout the night.
The top two Hacks (as decided by our judges, and by the community) will get:
- Bragging rights
- Recognition for your efforts, and promotion on devnation.org and on official Red Hat social media channels
- $100 per person for the top team, and $50 per person for the 2nd place team (5 team members max, Visa gift cards)
- Credits for OpenShift Online, Red Hat’s public cloud application development and hosting platform
- and more!
Pizza, beer, sodas, and snacks will be available to help keep your motivated as you sprint to complete your project goals.
Sign up for DevNation, and join us for the Hack Night to meet, and to work directly with developers from the open source community.
Space is limited, so reserve your spot now!
